Hope someone can use this and I hope someone can help me find out who his family is. I am not related to him, I just do research in Caddo county Oklahoma. NOWLAND, SAMUEL L. - Pvt. Co. A. 4th Reg. Mo. State Militia Cav.; enlisted 18-Mar-1862; discharged 08-Jul-1865; born 04-Jan-1846; died 05-Aug-1920; buried Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko. Taken from The Anadarko Tribune dated August 12, 1920; Samuel Nowland, son of Mary Jane and William Nowland was born in Washington county, Indiana, on the fourth day of January, 1846; and departed from this life at his home near Anadarko, Okla., on August 5, 1920 at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 1 day. Mr. Nowland's parents moved from Indiana to Holt county, Mo., when he was but six years of age, and there he made him home until December, 1908, when he with his family moved to Pawnee City, Neb., where he made his home for two years. In June, 1910, he, with his wife and son Adolph, moved to Anadarko, where he made his home until his death. Comrade Nowland enlisted in the Union army on the eighteenth day of March, 1862; and served three years as a private with company A, 4th Reg. Missouri State Militia Cav. On July 8, 1865 he was honorably discharged from the service at Benton Barracks, Mo. In the spring of 1866 he was married to Miss Sidney Rayhill. To this union four children were born--E.S., Steward, Morton and Mrs. Florence Lyons--all of whom are living. On March 26, 1881, his wife died. Under the pastorate of Rev. Downs he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Fairview, Holt county, Mo., and served as choir director of the church for a number of years. On January 25, 1888, he was married to Anna E. Armack. To this union were born three children--Harry W., who lives one and one half miles north of town; William Adolph, who lived at home, and Mrs. Blanche Scoggan of Pawnee City, Neb. Besides these three attending the funeral there were E.B. Nowland of Maitland, Mo., Stewart Nowland of Axtell, Mo., and Merton Nowland and wife of Woodston, Kansas. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 8, from the Methodist Church , conducted by Rev. W.E. Robinson, the pastor and assisted by the Grand Army of the Republic and the American Legion. As an appreciation of and in testimony of the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors, the church was filled at the hour of the funeral, which was 2:30 in the afternoon. Thus passes from the ranks of citizenship one more of our worthy citizens. He was one of the rapidly passing members of the G.A.R. He served the country and the flag he loved in the hour of its erisis and he shall not be forgotten. Commander Tilton of the Oklahoma G.A.R. spoke a few words at the grave, setting forth in a clear, concise manner the place that these old veterans ought to be held in the memories of all citizens and calling attention to the fruits of victory that we are all now enjoying. He has answered his last roll call, he has gone to meet his commander face to face; the march of another soldier is over; his battles are all fought; his victories all won, and as in other days he lies down to rest a while under the arching sky awaiting the bugler's call. Into the care and keeping of the Heavenly Father we leave him, who knoweth and doeth all things well. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
