'Oseki' - Nowicki Coat of Arms
The Nowicki coat of arms consists of three grappling hooks. 'OSEKI'.The staffs meet in the center of a blue field, with one hook pointing downward, the other two upward; one to the left and the other to the right. The crest includes three ostrich plumes affixed to the top of a helmet with the grappling hooks arranged in the plumes as in the shield.
The coat of arms originated in the ancient Lithuanian province of Witebsk. After an encounter with the Lithuanians an enemy force fled in panic throwing their equipment into the river.Nowicki used a grappling hook to retrieve bodies and spoils of war from the river. He received a promotion for his deeds and was given a coat of arms with the grappling hooks as an insignia.
The Nowickis occupied the Kuresiowszczyzna estate situated on the Ludzieja River in the Lida district in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for 300 years.Members of the Nowicki family, and the Oseki coat of arms, played an important role in military and political affairs since 1450.The list includes Bogdan (the Black), Prokop, and Theodore from Lida; Procopious from Rozlucz; Michael Siela, Kiev; Zachary, Smudz; and others from the Lithuanian areas of Minsk, Nowogrod, Trock, and Wilensk.
