The Nowell name originated from a Norman named Adam de Noailles. He went south to France. His desendants moved to England. There we find the name Nowell where it was pronounced Noel as in the song The First Nowell. Many songbooks have the spelling listed as The First Nowell. There were many Famous Nowells in England. The first Nowell in America was Increase Nowell. His name is also spelled Encrease in England. He is listed in 1625 in Boston as a Puritian preacher. In 1630 we find records of him in The Winthrop Fleet of 1630 and in The Mass. Bay colony records. He was on the governors board. These are all in my family linage. I hope this information helps. I will participate in the Nowell Y-DMA study if you will contact me and give me the vital information. firstname.lastname@example.org
