I knew that he was from the town called Sandblast, or at least that is what family lore was. And that his last name was Halvorson before he came to the US. I had yet to find anything to verify this so I was not committing to it! :) He was born in Norway between 1845 and 1856. He supposedly immigrated in 1881. I may have found his deceleration of intention in South Dakota, I have to call and req a copy tomorrow as I was hoping it would maybe have more information. But this looks like it might be him! He married his wife, Bertha, in 1882 and had four sons (those who survived): Alfred, Elmer, Lauritz and Olger (my great grandfather). Hal, Bertha and Elmer are buried together in Rose City cemetery in Portland, OR. I have all his census records and death certificate in my collection. But naturally would/need to know more about his life in Norway and the family there. Thanks!
