Johan Fredrik Andersen son of Anders Nielsen and Guri Fredriksdatter, born 18 Feb. 1860, christened 22 Apr 1860.

His baptism record, an actual scan of the page, should be on the Digitised parish registers, (which isn't working right now tonight. hmmmm.)

It should be on the registers for Kvernes, in the Norwegian county of Møre og Romsdal.

The information on the census of 1865 was interesting,

Kvernes (local parish church name)

In 1886 on the farm tax census, the oldest brother Niels Andersen is shown as the owner. It doesn't necessarily mean the parents have died. The oldest son inherited the farm and sometimes the parents. He was their retirement plan.

Here are all the farms/subfarms at the main farm called Vebenstad in 1886

Fylke: Møre og Romsdal (county)
Kommune: Kvernes (municipality)
Sogn: Bremsnes (parish)
Gårdsnummer: 67 (main farm number)
Gammelt matrikkelnr: 131 (old numbering system)
Navn på gård: Vebenstad (name of the main farm)
Antall bruk registrert på matrikkelgården: 10 (total subfarms that exist under that main farm)

10 228c Vebenstad Edvard Eriksen 0-27 0-0-21-0

on the census of 1900, the farm is listed under
1900-telling for 1554 Bremsnæs not under Kvernes. The parish must have gotten too big and divided into two churches perhaps.

By 1900 there is no sign of the old Anders Nielsen and wife Guri Fredriksdatter living there. In fact, the brother Niels Andersen is already retired and has given the farm over to HIS son, Anders Nielsen (names after his grandfather.) And to make it more confusing, Anders Nielsen has a son named Niels Andersen too.

The next time I can take a look at Vebenstad main farm 67, Subfarm 8, is in 1950, on another farm/tax census. It shows this owner's name:

Johannes A. Vebenstad

That looks like a good match for the oldest son that was on the 1900 census,

Johannes Andersen m b S ug Søn 1896

so it is a very good chance that unless something drastic happened in the last 60 years, the farm might still be owned by a descendant of that family. Which isn't unusual.

the good news for you is that they were farm owners, so their farm and family history might be traced in a community history book called a Bygdebok, which might tell if there were any siblings that emigrated, and even maybe tell when the parents died.

Averøy is an island where I think this all happened?
Their must be at least 3 church parishes there?

I think this fourth volume might be the one you want, the Bremsnes farm and family history information.

Try taking that Averøy bygdebok request to your local library and see if they can get the book on loan for you.

In 1925 or so Norwegians had to finally take a permanent lastname, and it looks like Vebenstad was the name of choice. There is a Norway white pages telephone book online and you can get names and addresses for any Vebenstads in that area and send them a snail mail if you want to.

the Norway names search site tells me that there are currently 126 with Vebenstad as last name. YOu might not be related to all of them, since unrelated people at that same main farm also probably took the permanent surname Vebenstad in 1925, but you could be related to some of them.

telephone and address searching, type Vebenstad into the blank

Then on the left are some ways to narrow it down a bit. Under the Surname heading, click on Vebenstad.

After that refreshes, then go to Averøy on the left menu, click and let that refresh. Those names and addresses that are left are the ones I would write to if you want to try to contact relatives. Keep the letter simple, in English, and include information about your ancestor. Maybe some photos.

I did some online searching and found some old family gossip,

In the parish records it shows that Anders Nielsen had an illegitimate child around 1900. (he was the farm owner in 1900, the son of Niels Andersen, and grandson of the older Anders Nielsen, your subject's father)

It was from the genealogist page where they were asking for additions and corrections to the bygdebok for that area.

Any of them with the postal code

6530 Averøy

seem like good ones to write to.

Vebenstad is a farm in Bådalen in Averøy.
