The family in the 1801 Norwegian census -

Hjelmeland parish records as early as 1760 still survive and can be used on LDS microfilm copies at your nearest LDS Family History Center.
A published history of the area exists and could be used to possibly gather more detail -
"Hjelmeland: gardar og folk", 3 volumes by Trygve Brandal
