John Norton is my 3rd Great Grandfather. He married Jane White (1798-1860), daughter of William White who lived on Kellys Creek in Lincoln County, Tennessee, in 1813. They had six children and about 1825 he abandoned her. She successfully sued for divorce in Lawrence County, Alabama in 1830. Her divorce testimony claims she heard he was in jail in Natchez on a felony charge.

John's middle initial may have been "A". Multiple lines of his descendants claim he was full Cherokee Indian, or half Cherokee by his father. He was born between 1775-1794 per the 1820 Census.

We are reasonably certain he is NOT John Huddleston Norton (1820 Census, 1830 Divorce Decree, Patricia Welch research).

Their children were:

Jemima Norton (1815-1860) married William Dollar (1807-1860)
John Norton (born 1821) married Priscilla Johnson
James Norton (born 1820) married Rody Jane Dennis
William Norton - died at the Battle of Monterrey in 1846
Rachel Norton (born 1821-1825) married Unknown Faust
Unknown Son

Jane remarried John A Jones and lived her final days in Crawford County, MO near her children Jemima and John. She died in 1860.

I have more information about this family and would be eager to exchange with others.
