Hi there, I noticed on the Gen Forum Board at Genealogy.com that you are looking for the parents of Zacheus H. Norton (b 17 Dec 1788 - d 27 Apr 1839). I'm wondering if you've had any luck. Zacheus Norton was my GGG Grandfather and I have been seeking the same information for more than a year now. It is my belief that he was not necessarily from Rhode Island as one misleading Chautauqua County source indicates, but he or his family were from Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut. In fact, I am wondering if Zacheus may have been the son of one Joseph Norton, b 9 Apr 1762 and who died in Bennington, Vermont on or abt 1819. This particular Joseph Norton was married to a Mary Murphy. I have no additional information other than the fact that Zacheus married a Sylvia Thompson in Geneseo, New York sometime between 1812 and 1814. This couple then moved to Chautauqua County and lived in several townships there, but most notably the Town of Ellery. He and Sylvia are buried in Red Bird Cemetery in the northeast section of Ellery Township near Gerry, NY. Also, there was a Zacheus Norton who served in the War of 1812 in northeastern Ohio on the Connecticut Western Reserve. I would contend that a strong lead is to look for Zacheus' parents in Connecticut. Family tradition indicates that the Nortons were involved in the making of pottery in Vermont. In fact, there was a Revolutionary War Veteran named Captain John Norton who founded Bennington Potters. I have, unfortunately, been unable to establish a connection. Best regards and I hope we connect...
