Death of an Educator
Professor Marvin Quackenbush, Superintendent of Schools for Kane County Answers the Summons
Professor Marvin Quackenbush, superintendent of the schools of Kane County, died Wednesay morning at his home in West Dundee. He was born at Hartwick, Otsego county, N.Y., November 25, 1842 and came to Illinois with his parents when he was 7 years old. Prior to enlisting in the One Hundred and Fifty Third Illinois volunteer infantry he taught school in various towns throughout the country, a on returnig from the battlefield resumed teaching at St. Charles. He was the first elected county superintendent of schools in 1886 and held the position up to the time of his death.
Professor Quackenbush was married at Clintonville, now South Elgin, in August 1870, to Miss Eleanor Boynton, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Boynton, pioneer settlers of Dundee. For six years he was a member of the directory of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was elected mayor of Dundee two years ago but was compelled to resign on account of ill health.
The funeral was held Monday from the Congregational church at Dundee. Public schools in St. Charles were closed that afternoon. Pall bearers were men from different cities of the county, as follows: Frank E. George, of Batavia; J.R. Smith of Dundee; E. F. Goodell of St. Charles; Anson J. Buck of Carpentersville; Eugene Norton of Dundee and D.B. Smith of Minnesota.
Those in attendance at the funeral from St. Charles were Prof. Mann, Misses Libbie McCarthy, Caulkins and Augusta Haseltine, Mr. and Mrs. Goodell, E.T. Cassidy, Frank Rockwell, Jas. Doherty, Mrs. Jennie C. Nichols and Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Blanchard. The three last mentioned were among his first pupils.
