JOHN & GEORGE CONN MA/HUGH CONN MD/CONN SC
I just wanted to mention for people who are trying to make connections among Conns that John Conn of Groton, Mass. is related to Hugh Conn of Maryland, according to Alex Conn's history of the Conn family in Ayrshire, Scotland at Ayrshireroots.com (he has a new URL but I think you'll be forwarded to it). John and Hugh were both from Magilligan, Northern Ireland.
Also, John Conn's will leaves land to his son Thomas Conn in South Carolina, which Thomas takes up. This land is described as in "Wonyon upon pede River so Called." John gave other lands in "Caroliner" to his grandsons John Conn of Harvard (Mass.) and John Gragg (son of Jacob and Margaret) of Groton.
On a related note, John Conn's son George, born about 1716 in Northern Ireland, was married in Boston at the Old Federal Street Scots-Irish Church (now Arlington Street Church) to Mary Davis on 28 Oct 1736/37, demonstrating that he was in the US before the 1740s and that his children by Mary were all born in the U.S. His daughter Ann was born 14 Aug 1738 (she married James Read at Harvard, Mass.), John was born 6 Sept 1740, and Elizabeth was born 14 Mar 1743--all recorded at Old Federal Street Church. These are the only Conn records there during the Scots-Irish period. Hence George's daughter Rosanna was not born in Ireland as has been claimed but in Massachusetts.
Possibly George came to the States before his father. John Conn appears in the town of Harvard about 1747 and is called by Nourse, the town historian, the first Scotsman to come to Harvard. John first appears in land deeds in 1747 at Littleton. I haven't discovered where George lived before moving to Harvard.
I am descended from James Read Sr. and Ann Conn.
