David Miller and Elizabeth Hogg's children coming to US
In A History of the Puget Sound Country: Its Resources, Its Commerce and Its ...
By William Farrand Prosser pg 338, you find a biography about Samuel Miller, he and his brothers migrations to the US and birth place of his parents, Ireland for his father, Scotland, for his mother.
Some highlights:
Parents are listed as David Miller and Elizabeth Hogg. David is listed as an Irish Native who died in 1853, “having been a farmer and a member of a good Irish family”. Elizabeth is listed as a native of Scotland who would later die in Iowa in 1874.
Children credited to David and Elizabeth are:
James – who “immigrated to Virginia for a large firm in 1850, became a slave owner, and died in 1860.
William – who settled in Pittsburgh,Pa and died in 1900
John – who married in Illinois and farmed in Iowa and Kansas
Dr. Robert – went to Pittsburgh and became a Methodist preacher
one sister immigrated, deceased
Samuel – (whom the article was about) after schooling, worked in the police forces in Ireland and Glasgow, he qualified for the Queens' Life Guards but honored his mothers' objections and went to Glasgow instead.. After immigrating he farmed some in Illinois but then Operated a livery stable with a brother in Mason County, Illinois. (believe this to be William David, both he and John married Ames (Eames) sisters here, but John and his wife had moved on within a couple years of the wedding. - or could they all 3 have run it?) There appears to have been a break in working with thelivery, the “fallow” time being consumed with business in Ireland. Samuel is credited as marrying Margaret Hall, daughter of George Hall, a farmer of Ireland in 1863. - This makes it sound as if they did not marry in Ireland. There is much more about Samuel.
