JOHN NOWLIN of Isle of Wight County Virginia, 1643
I have found a JOHN NOWLIN of Isle of Wight County Virginia, 1643. He may be related to WILLIAM NOWLAND (NOLAND) (NOWLIN) of Goochland Co. VA, 1740 and of Albemarle Co. VA, 1744. Below is evidence that THOMAS NOLUN (NOLIN) who died Goochland Co. VA, 1729 may be the father of said William. THOMAS NOLIN is in James City Co. VA, 1717. James City Co. VA is one county north of Isle of Wight Co. VA: Isle of Wight, Surry, James City.

ISLE OF WIGHT CO. VA DEED RECORD
Dec 1643 Thomas HESSON to William BRUNT for 1000 pounds tobacco ...? acres on south side of JOHN NOWLIN adjoining James WATSON. Mention is made of John SEWARD and Mr. Robert PITT. Wit: JOHN NOWLIN; Rec: 19 Oct 1644; Signed: Thomas HESSON
A JOHN NOWLIN (NOWLAN) of Carlow County, Ireland born around 1640 or before is reportedly the father of JAMES NOWLAN (NOWLIN) and 3-5 brothers who arrived in America around 1700. Evidence is presented below that THOMAS NOLUN (NOLIN) and JAMES NOWLAN (NOWLIN) are both living in the Beaver Dam Creek area of Henrico Co. VA in the early 1700's: James City, Charles City, Henrico.
There are currently two other separate research avenues for the progenitor of William NOWLAND (NOLAND) (NOWLIN) of Goochland County Virginia, 1740. The second research area is that William NOWLAND (NOLAND) (NOWLIN) may be related to the William and Thomas NOWLAND who came to the New World on the ship “George” in 1677. The possibility exists that Thomas NOLUN (NOLIN), who died in 1729 Goochland County, is the father of said William. Thomas NOLUN (NOLIN) may also be the offspring of Thomas NOWLAND from the ship “George.” Thomas and William NOWLAND are part of the Pierce NOWLAND, NOLAND, NOLEN, line.
Pierce NOWLAND (NOLAND) II's youngest child was a William NOWLAND (NOLAND) born in Charles County, Maryland about 1703. This William NOWLAND (NOLAND) was a minor in 1715. He probably was not of age until 1724 when the estate of Pierce NOWLAND (NOLAND) II seems to have been settled. And this William NOWLAND (NOLAND) was reportedly in Prince William County, Virginia and could have easily migrated to Goochland County, Virginia by 1740. Prince William Co. Deed Book R, 1768-1771, however, had a WILLIAM NOLAN in Prince William Co. during that time. This research area is listed below and further information can be obtained at NOLANDS OF AMERICA provided by Sharon Noland.
PIERCE NOWLAND is of record first in Cecil County, Maryland and next in Charles County, Maryland.
13 October, 1686
"Feddar" consisting of 300 acres was surveyed for him and patented to him, on June 12, 1688, lying in Cecil County on the western-most side of Elk River.
Liber R No. 1, folio 509, recorded in Charles County, Maryland, states that PIERCE NOWLAND traded 300 acres of land he owned in Cecil County for land from THOMAS LYNDSEY in Charles County, 4 November, 1692.
This land adjoined property of COLONEL JAMES SMALLWOOD. Research has given clues about the NOWLAND (NOLAND) family moving into Virginia from Maryland.
NOWLAND (NOLAND) BROTHERS - ARRIVING FROM IRELAND TO AMERICA
PIERCE NOWLAND (NOLAND) 1675 settled in Cecil Co. Maryland
and then moved to Charles Co. where he spent most of his life.
PHILLIP NOWLAND (NOLAND) 1677 settled in Loudoun Co. Virginia.
THOMAS NOWLAND (NOLAND) 1678 settled in Anne Arundel Co. Maryland.
WILLIAM NOWLAND (NOLAND) 1678 Maryland arrived on same ship as his
brother Thomas.
HENRY NOWLAND (NOLAND) 1679 settled in Kent Co. Maryland with his
sons: Henry, Jr. and Richard.
DARBY NOWLAND (NOLAND) and wife ANN BROWNING 1680 settled in Cecil Co. Maryland.
Or Thomas NOLUN (NOLIN), who died in 1729 Goochland Co. Virginia, could be a brother to James NOWLAN (NOWLIN) who came to the New World around 1700. John Ryan in The History of Carlow County, Ireland, states the possibility of there being two more brothers beyond that of James, John, and William.
This is the most promising avenue of research to date. According to Goochland County VA Wills and Deeds, 1736-1742 and Henrico County VA Wills and Deeds, 1707-1737, JAMES NOWLAND (NOWLIN) (NOWLING) resided on Beaver Dam Creek.

John, William, & James Nowlan of County Carlow, Ireland, reportedly sailed to Jamestown, Virginia around 1700. William is reported to have gone to the New England states. John, William and James were from the following line:
John Nowlan, born 1640 in Carlow Ireland
Patrick Nowlan, born about 1625 in Carlow Ireland
Daniel Nowlan, born about 1600 in Carlow Ireland
John Nowlan, born about 1550 in Shangarry, Carlow Ireland
Donough/Hugh Nowlan, born circa 1500-1550 in Ireland
“The O' Nuallains were princes of the Foharta, now the Barony of Forth in the County Carlow, Ireland. In pre-Norman days their chiefs held high office under the Kings of Leinster. In Irish, the name O' Nuallain means descendant of Nuallan, the word Nuallan means a shout or cry. The name was anglicized O' Nowlan, Nowlan, and Nolan. To this
day, Nolan is among the forty most numerous names in Ireland. Further in The History of Carlow County Ireland, by John Ryan is the following passage:
“After the rebellion of 1641-1662 had been suppressed (in which the Nowlans took sides with the Catholic party), the Nowlans lost a great deal of their property which was included in the grant made to James Butler, Earl of Ormonde, Lt. General of the Protestant Forces. Due to the Irish Rebellion of 1641, most of the land belonging to the Nowlan family in Northern Ireland was seized by James Butler, the lieutenant general of
the Protestant Forces. The family took this complaint to court but was rejected because one of the sons had participated in the revolution. Around 1700, at least 3 (possibly 5) of the Nowlan brothers came from Ireland to America. The Castle of Ballinrobe, in Northern Ireland, belonged to the Nowlan family. Perhaps the Barony of Forth.“
History found in The Nowlin- Stone Genealogy by James Edmund
The third research area is that William Nowland (Noland) of Goochland County Virginia, 1740 may be related to Patrick Nowland (Nowlin) (Nolinn). William and Patrick are listed in the Albemarle County VA Surveyor’s Plat Book I which is shown below. And both are listed in Amherst County VA Deed Records for 1761 as having an interest in old Albemarle County prior to 1761.
