MacNeill Newtonstewart, Tyrone, Northern Ireland

I am descended from John MacNeill, who had a son Andrew, born 1836, Newtonstewart, Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Andrew married Frances Thompson 1854 Newtonstewart. Andrew and Frances immigrated to Australia in 1863 aboard the ship Vanguard.

When they immigrated, they listed themselves as Scotch, not Irish, would anyone know why this would be so?

Also if anyone has a link with the above details, please contact me.
