Hi, Ishmael. Thank you very much for your reply. You wrote a great capsule summary of the Scots Irish. It covered all of the main bases.
I agree with you that the term became popular in the nineteenth century. The Scots Irish were called Irish in the USA before that. However, there were some occasions when the term was used before the 1800's. Queen Elizabeth I used it if I'm not mistaken.
I'm descended from both Highland Scottish and Lowland Scottish too. I agree with you that some people from the former group did come to Northern Ireland, even though their numbers were small in comparison. I also agree with you that the Lowland Scottish were of various ancestries. Some web sites go out of their way to deemphasize any Celtic blood in this group while other web sites mention that there actually is a Celtic influence in some parts of northern England.
That 2% figure seems low to me too. Maybe there are several explanations for this. The first is the huge numbers of immigrants from different countries, especially Germany and Ireland. Another explanation is that some people thought they were Irish rather than Scots Irish, like you said. Many folks just have no idea of their ancestry, so they sometimes guess. Then there's the inescapable fact that some people might adopt ethnic groups that seem more interesting to them. Another factor is intermarriage. The Scots Irish settlers had a tendency to marry people of other nationalities. I think the census asked for just one or two ancestral groups. Scots Irish could have been in the mix of people who listed other ancestries. BTW, did you know that Jack Dempsey and John Wayne were Scots Irish? I always thought they were Irish Irish.
Researching the Scots Irish has been a bit frustrating because I have seen so much contradictory information, and all of the authors are CERTAIN that they're right.
