The Bowies were my husband's gr. gr. grandparents.
Alexander Bowie is buried in the San Juan Bautista Cemetery. His tombstone has a birthdate of Oct 1790 in Scotland and he died on 27 Oct 1871.
From what I have found, they had 10 children.Only two of their children that moved from Canada to California had children. Those are Charlotte Bowie Smith and Agnes Bowie Sargent.
Charlotte (my hubby's line) married Samuel Worsley Smithand had 5 daughters - Elizabeth who married Richard Flint, Charlotte Henrietta who married Irvin Moore, Maude who married George Roop, Jr., Florence who married Irving Grundell, and Gertrude who I believe died young as she is not mentioned in her Aunt Agnes Sargent's obit (Agnes died in 1924).
From Early days at the mission San Juan Bautista-
"Alexander, or "Old Man Bowie" as he was known in San Juan, ran a bakery in town. Alexander and his family came to San Juan from Canada, where Alexander had originally moved from his native country of Scotland.
One of Alexander's sons, Joseph, was an expert accountant and for a time worked in San Jose and in the New Almaden quicksilver mines. He was also a deputy sherrif of Santa Clara county. Alexander had another son named Alex.
The eldest of the quartette was a very finely educated woman who not only taught French and music but also taught school at San Juan for a long time. I went to school to her, and we used to call her, "Aunt Eliza." Another daughter married "Jim" Sargent; the third married Wesley Smith and the other daughter married a man by the name of Hall. One of the Wesley Smith's daughters married Dr. Thos. Flint's son, Richard."
Hope this helps.
