August & Will leave for Yukon from St. Charles, 1898
St. Charles (Kane County, Illinois) Chronicle, March 11, 1898, Page 1, Took Their Last Look. August and Will Nord and Fred Sundberg, of this city, and a young fellow by the name of Ward, of Wasco, took their farewell of friends and relatives in St.Charles Sunday evening and departed on the 7:35 train over the Great Western (bound) for St. Paul. From thence they g(missing) the Canadian Pacific line direct to Victoria, Canada, and from there they will (missing) the steamer to Fort Wrangle. From (that) point they cut across to the Yukon river and then up to Dawson City by steamer.
A pleasant party was held at the Nord homestead last week, and the young men were feasted and very much petted by their numerous friends.
There were a large number of the Swedish people, besides many other curious ones at the depot when the train pulled out.
The baggage which the boys carry with them was novel indeed. It completely covered a large truck, and included sleeping bags, heavy boots, guns, ammunition, a medicine chest, Klondike clothing, small canvas bags and numerous other foreign affairs. The tools and supplies will be procured at Seattle, and if being prepared has anything to do with future success the boys will expect all kinds of prosperity. We wish them God speed.
In another section of the same paper, under the heading Local Notes: The Nord boys and Mr. Sundberg are at Victoria, Canada today. They will provision at Seattle, just across the bay, and remain in that vicinity for several days. (Posted as a courtesy from a crumbling old newspaper, not related.)
