Hi Tracy -
My Norbury line is one that I have not pursued very actively. Therefore, the information that I have to date on this line is very little beyond that contained in my initial posting. While I cannot positively identify (at this time) any of your Norburys in Wakefield as being from the same line as my Norburys in Wakefiled, I feel certain that there is a connection. The given names of children in your line are repeated in my line. More telling, though, is that your Benjamin Norbury Lockwood married Jane Swallow. I say this because I have a copy of a letter from George E.C. Norbury, address Lush Dyke, Ossett near Wakefield, England, to his brother(my great-great-grandfather)Charles Norbury in Buffalo, New York. Among other things, the letter refers to Uncle Swallow, Joseph Swallow, and Aunt Swallow. It is an interesting letter on many levels, mentioning changes in the church at Ossett, as well as the fact that there is now a railway from Wakefield to Ossett. Let me know if you would like me to e-mail you a transcript of the letter. (My e-mail address is [email protected])
You mention children of James and Elizabeth Norbury christened in Wakefield in the late 1700s. Can you tell me the source of your information? I am anxious to find the original records and see if they will provide clues to the Norburys of whom I am already aware. If you could provide me with the name of the church involved, I could hopefully find the records on microfilm through the LDS Church. I would also like to further explore and exchange Norbury information with you.
Before resonding to your posting, I also read a post that you placed in response to a Query re Dick Lockwood of Dewsbury, Yorkshire. It mentioned that your Benjamin Norbury Lockwood emigrated to Bridgeport, Connecticut in the early 1900s. In doing a quick search of the Ellis Island records, I found an entry that I believe refers to this person. - Hope it provides you with some information that you don't already possess:
New York City Arrival from Liverpool on 21 October 1911 via the SS Campania:
Benjamin N. Lockwood, 58 year old Engine Driver; Last resided in Castleford, England; Nearest Relative: Brother, William Lockwood, Lock Lane in Castleford; Final Destination is Bridgeport, Connecticut; He paid for his own passage & is in possession of at least $50; He will be meeting his friend Christopher Martin, 359 Mitchell Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut; He was born in Wakefield, England & is 5'7" tall. There is also a note from the ship doctor indicating that he has a "decent_____(illegible) left hernia and loss of part of left index finger".
Accompanying Benjamin on this trip are his daughter and son:
Lily, 25 years old daughter, Occupation LKeeper (?); Born in Horbury, Yorkshire & 5'9" tall.
Charles, 21 year old son, Occupation: Laborer; Born in Woodkirk, Yorkshire, 5'7" tall.
I hope that this helps and I look forward to hearing from you. -
Lynda
