Thanks for the reply - I tried to also send an email to yoru btinternet email, but it didn't seem to go through. The email now shown for me is correct, the other one is extinct.
The information you gave is great, I didn't know any of this.My brother tried to reply to you but the email was bouned back. I believe we have a photo of Charles Albert Noon with Martha Bromley - we can send you a scan if you're interested.
My brother Gareth has details of Arthur Wellesley Noon's birth, marriage and death certificates. It's only recently that we realised Arthur had a brother - our father remembered his name as Harold in a note he made, but perhaps this was inaccurate.
Arthur Noon married twice: we are his grandchildren from the later marriage. Unfortunately the two families seem never to have had much to do with each other. Until now we haven't known the name of our grandfather's first wife, but my father knew that his father had had another family, so I think there were children from that first marriage. I understand Arthur Noon worked as a civil engineer in India at one point: I have a photo which seems to be set in India, which I am pretty sure is of him and his first wife. I would say it dates to the 1880s or 90s. But Arthur Noon later moved South Africa, where he worked on civil engineering projects, played a small part in the early socialist and labour movements, and stood twice for election as an MP. He was there in 1911, according to this memoir. I believe his first family was in Cape Town at that time, and that descendants of his first marriage lived there for many years. But I don't know whether any of them survive.
According to the marriage certificate we have, he seems to have become a widower by 1913. Our father Edward Noon was the child of this second marriage, but unfortunately our grandfather died in 1924, a year after our father was born.
Both my brother and I live in London, our sister lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
