In the 1850 Marion County, TN census record, there is a James “Nolin”, age 26 and a blacksmith, with wife Rachel R. and son Washington, age nine months. All born in TN. This Rachel R. is Rachel Rebecca Francis, daughter of Edward Francis and Winnifred Ownsby. Edward and Winnifred (Winnie) Francis are living next door to James and Rachel Nolin. (Francis is sometimes transcribed as Frances.) By 1860, there are three “Knowlin” children living in the household of Edward and Winnie Francis. They are Washington, age 9; David, age 7; and George, age 6. These three “Nowen” grandsons (Alexander, David and George) are living next door to Edward and Winnie Francis in the 1870 Marion County, TN census record. In 1880, George “Knowlon”, age 25 is living with wife Mary in Marion County. That’s as far as I have gotten on these grandchildren of Edward Francis. I don’t know if this is your Alexander but seems like a possibility. I would be interested in learning where Alexander was in 1870 and beyond and who his children were. I’m descended from one of Edward and Winnie’s daughters, Nancy Francis who married George W. Knox.

Thanks for any information you can share.
