S G Noles 1909 Era

This is a long shot but I thought I'd try. I acquired an old wood trinket box which appears to be hand made. I honestly got it off EBay in the antiques section. (I collect)When I received it there was a small picture of a man's head in it, a pin that would go in a corsage, and a pair of gold cuff or tie links. The pin and links were fasted to the material lined in the inside. The picture was in the inside bottom of box. When I contacted the seller of who the man was, they told me they themselves had purchased the box years prior at an estate sale and further more, they had opened that box dozens of times to show it off and there was never ever a picture inside. (SPOOKY HUH?) On the bottom of the box is the name kind of a burnt carving in of the name: S G Noles December 7, 1909
The S's are backwards.
I was just curious of who this may be and why I would be attracted to this box and be the one to find the pic inside when the prior owners never saw it and claim it was not in the box. Any info would be appreciated.
The top of the box cover has a flower design carved in it and some dye coloring.
