I just found this Otero County site and put in Mayhill and brought up these messages. Christi, it is so helpful for you and Denise to offer help. I don't have a request right now but since you are in the area I thought that I would mention that my mother's ancestors are the Barkley and Bell families of the Weed, Mayhill, Mountain Park, High Rolls and Cloudcroft areas. They are also related to the Scott, Nations, Millers, and many other families there.
Mother recalls a winter burial when the ground was so frozen that the only place they could bury the person was in James Canyon in a spot that had more sun than other spots. My great-grandparents were J.E.C. Bell and Sally Ward Bell and George Washington Barkley and Artensia Elivia Wilson. My grandparents were Chas. M. Bell and Bertha Pearl Barkley and Wiley A. Smith and Addie Sullivan (first wife)and step-grandmother, Anna Kelly Hardcastle Bassett Smith. Any relation to your families?
