Gayla: I don't know if I can be of much help but have you contacted the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton (not Roton)? If not, they say they have old newspapers. The phone number is 505-445-9711. See if they have any papers which covers the time period, even a Santa Fe or Albuquerque paper might have reported on the accident. Often times libraries will furnish articles for a small fee. Since you have the exact date of death a lot of searching shouldn't be necessary. New Mexico Genealogical Society has an excellent website. There is a book: "New Mexico Mining Fatalities and Accidents 1894-1925" by Karen Stein Daniel which they sell. You might want to look into that potential source. Link:

I suspect the Raton library also has the book and might do a look up. There is also a volunteer, Nancy Robertson, on the Colfax Co. GenWeb site who will do lookups from cemetery books. She has written extensively on the history of the area (according to the site). Since this fellow was from Italy, it's likely that he was Catholic so I would start my search there. As far as an obit is concerned, bear in mind that many folks who died in those days had no obit published. This was a single guy and on his death certificate his parents are listed as "unknown". That tells me that he may not have had any close relatives in the area. But that is just a guess and you no doubt know better than me. I hope you get lucky and someone on this board from the area does a look-up for you. Otherwise, you might just have to do a little digging. Rick
PS - A few years ago I did a little research for someone with the same question but I THINK the accident was in Colorado. I did find that old mining accident reports were archived but no longer remember where. Perhaps the state archives or a university. I just don't remember. Perhaps NM has archived their reports, assuming such reports were done.
