Ted,
"Jeff" (Thomas Jefferson Bratcher) was my Great-Granduncle.Do you know when Jeff move to New Mexico? Was it at the same time as my Grandfather, his nephew, Edward Lorance Bratcher (early 30's)?
My Aunt Eddie Belle Laverne Bratcher said their family (EL and [Hattie] Belle Galloway Bratcher) moved from Vera, Knox County, Texas, to Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico when she was just days old. She's my Daddy's youngest sister, and though I don't know her DOB offhand, Daddy was born in 1926.She's 2-5 years younger than he, so she was born (and they moved) sometime after that, probably between 1928 and 1931.
Jeff had been living with his parents still in 1900 in Ardmore, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Okla.).In 1910, he, Lillie and son Lynn were in Cooke County, Texas, according to the census. In September, 1918, he was in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, per his WWI draft registration card, which states he was physically disqualified from service as one leg was 6" short.
In 1930 he was back in Texas (Crosby County) with wife Lillie Gertrude Hughes and children Lynn, Velma, Vivian, Jeff, Ralph, Mildred, Carlton, Homer Ual, Burnice and Beatrice.
By the by...
Aunt Eddie Belle told me a story about Lillie - about when Jeff was baptized (not sure if Jeff Sr. or Jr.) - that they wouldn't let him back up out of the water until he was "good and baptized" because he'd been such a sinner.
