Estenes/Smith/Istenes - Eagle's Nest
Posted by: Virginia Crilley Date: June 14, 2001 at 05:15:55

Researching Estenes or Smith families who lived in Eagle's Nest (Colfax County, New Mexico)around 1920.

They were coal mining families from western Pennsylvania, and had migrated from Hungary around 1890.

Because of name changes this has been a challenge. I understand that the original name in Hungary was Istvan Istenes.....this later became the surname Estenes. Some children kept this name, while others used the name Smith.

Steve (Istenes/Estenes) Smith was born around 1868 in Hungary, married Barbar Lilam-Molnar there, and they came to America in 1890. I'm not sure when they came to Eagle's Nest to mine.

Thanks for your help.
