In his book "Coal Town the Life and Times of Dawson New Mexico", Toby Smith wrote: "On April 18, 1909, Thomas O'Neill shot and killed tipple boss Walter Byers during an argument". He obviously has the year wrong because Walter is alive and well in the 1910 Census along with his wife Phoebe (?) and eight children. Walter's occupation is "tipple foreman". A death certificate may not exist as they were not required in New Mexico until 1919. There are some however but my reference doesn't have a Walter Byers listed. As for his burial site - no luck there either. Just a quess but I would think that he would have been buried in the Dawson Cemetery. I have walked both Dawson Cem. and Mount Calvary in Raton. There are many unmarked graves in both. I imagine that the wooden markers disintegrated over time. Sorry not to be of more help. It's an interesting story. Notify Administrator about this message?
