Harriet Slater Drake d. 1877

I have Harriet Slater Drake as the dau. of Joseph Jr. & Eliza (Primrose) Slater of Sussex Co. She is not mentioned in Joseph Jr.'s will, but is mentioned in Eliza's mother's will as "Harriet Drake, dau. of Eliza Slater." A biographical/historical sketch of Harrriet's bro-in-law, W.P. Gaylord (husb. of Sarah Elizabeth Slater), gives Harriet's d.o.d. as 2Dec. 1877. The strange thing is that Joseph Jr. & Eliza weren't married until 1827, yet Harriet is "Harriet Drake" in 1839 when Eliza's mother's will was written. This makes me wonder if Harriet was an adopted daughter (?). Does anyone have info. that would help clear this up?
