This explanation is on a Hawthorne, NJ website. . .Before Passaic County was established, Manchester Township included what are now Totowa, Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park, Hawthorne and most of the First Ward of Paterson. However, there was great desire for separate boroughs and on March 24, 1898 Hawthorne became an independent borough. As other areas became independent, Manchester Township ceased to exist in Passaic County.
