HUDSON BENNETT, a prominent retired citizen of FREEHOLD, is
the youngest son of WILLIAM H. BENNETT & JANE (LEFFERTSON),
was born 1 May 1825 at FREEHOLD, NJ. He acquired his education in private schools in Freehold, but was taken from school to assist his father in the management of the farm, upon which he has resided all
his life to the present time. ...since his father's death he has turned his attention to developing that portion of Freehold by cutting his farm up into building lots, improving them, and laying out streets. ..all the
southeastern portion was made personally...in about 6 years. He has already layed out the following streets:Elm, Mechanic, Bennett, Bitumen and Main on the west side of the NY & Atlantic Highlands RR
..beyond the RR, he has layed out :Center, Factory, Broad, Liberty, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, the property on these Sts chiefly owned and operated by employees of the Rothchild Shirt factory, which is also located on his
farm........ For 7 years he was an active member of the Freehold infantry militia under Major Yeard.
He is..one of the 3 oldest citizens of Freehold.
He was married on 5 Jan. 1854 to CORNELIA SICKLES, daughter
of Hendrick SICKLES, farmer of Monmouth. ..2 children:
ANNA BENNETT b: 19 Oct 1854 m: WILLIAM H FORMAN (attny &
ex-mayor of Freehold, now living in Freehold) and
DR. HENRY HUDSON BENNETT, jr b: 22 March 1857(practicing
