Doug, The Monmouth County Courthouse is located in Freehold, NJ., so it is likely your Joseph Shepherd came from Freehold. You should contact the Monmouth County Archives in Manalapan, NJ, and the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold (near the courthouse). The Archives may be able to provide you with information about deeds and mortgages. I looked in John E. Stillwell's "Historical Miscellany", which has a genealogy on the Shepherds in vol. 4. There are some Josephs', but none born ca 1748. Does your Joseph's pension record provide the names of his wife and children? Was he in the Continental Line or the Militia?

Good luck with your research. Susan
