If your ancestors name was spelled with one t, he was almost certainly a descendent of Willem Adriaense Bennet, the founder of the "Dutch" Bennet's in America. This family is detailed in the NY Genealogical and Biographical Record in an excellent study by Wilson Ledley, beginning in Vol XCIII, Nr.4, Oct 1962. My great-great grandfather was married in Shrewsbury Twsp, so I know the Dutch Bennet's inhabited that area.
