Hi, Does anyone know if Cranberry bogs were an important industry in Monmouth Co? I know they were in Burlington and Ocean Co but I can't seem to locate any info in Monmouth Co. Property that I used to own that was located between Jackson Mllls road and Pittenger Pond Road in Freehold Twp.had cranberry bogs on it. Not far from it was "Burkes Bog" which had remnants of cranberry bogs.As a kid ( now a senior citizen) I roamed these bogs. They were my playyard in the summer and I skated on Burkes bog in the winter. There were traces of the old dam on the brook , ( North Branch of the Metedaconk) on my proerty. Though family history told tales of a sawmill located there , I found no remnant.I wonder who was the last person to run the mill?John Errickson, my ancestor mentions the sawmill in his will but says nothing about the cranberry bogs.I'm wondering if they sold the cranberries and if so who bought them? Thank-You. Carol E. Chan Notify Administrator about this message?
