I've never had to look into records such as these, but since they're so old and since the historian said that they have some records there, it sounds as though there wouldn't be paper copies or microfilm elsewhere. I guess you could e-mail the State and ask them -

Middlesex County has a building with archival records but I doubt if "State" records would be there, if indeed they exist at all -

I can certainly understand the historian saying it's not recommended that you go there since it's no longer a place for incorrigible young boys. I wonder if you phoned again and offered to pay an employee to look for the records during his/her lunch time or after work if someone would, or would be allowed to.
