Smalley family in New Jersey

SMALLEY, SHEETS, COLEMAN, YAWGER, PACE, COMPTON and VANCE.

Great-Grandfather James SMALLEY was born to Samuel SMALLEY and Emily (?) SMALLEY Dec. of 1849 or Jan. of 1850. He was found on the 1850 US Census in Bedminster Twsp., Somerset Co., N.J. but no birth record can be found. His brother Edward SMALLEY was born October 30th 1847 in Bernards Twsp., Somerset County, New Jersey. Sister Lauretta SMALLEY was born September 18th, 1857 in Bernards Twsp, Somerset Co., New Jersey.

I have no info as to who the parents of Samuel SMALLEY or Emily (?) are so any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. According to the 1850 US Census, Samuel SMALLEY would have been born about 1824 in New Jersey and Emily would have been born about 1827 in New Jersey. Samuel may have been the son of William SMALLEY and William may have been the son of David SMALLEY and Margaret COMPTON but I have no proof of this. However, these people were all shown living in Bernards Twsp. on the 1840 & 1850 Census records.

James married Harriet C. SHEETS 13 June, 1874 at Mendham, Morris Co. Grandfather, Charles Frederick SMALLEY born 25 March, 1876 at Somerset, Morris Co. I know they started west in 1878 and I found them on the 1880 U.S. Census in Eight Mile Grove, Cass Co., Nebraska. From there they went to Hay Springs, Nebraska where they homesteaded till 1891. In 1891 they moved to South Dakota where James was employed as "Boss Farmer" on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation till 1906. James then helped found the town of Interior, SD and for many years operated a general store and was post master for several years.

Harriet was the daughter of Jacob W. SHEETS & Ann COLEMAN Her brothers and sisters are: Emily b. Abt 1838, Lambert b. 3 April 1844, Lemuel b. 24 June 1848, & Ann b. 10 December, 1854. Harriet was born May, 1851. She was more or less raised by older sister Emily & husband John F. YAWGER & grew up with her nieces & nephews: Addie b. Abt. 1860 married John F. HORSFALL, Frederick b. Abt 1861, Minnie b. Abt 1864, Harry b. Abt 1873, Daisy b. Abt 1873 married Alfred Halstead COMPTON, Clara born Abt 1877 married Woodruff M. VANCE, and John born Abt 1881.

I have many photos of these people that were sent to Great-Grandmother Harriet from New Jersey over the years and would be happy to share them with anyone researching these surnames. Would love to hear from and share info with anyone in my extended family.

I can be reached by E-mail (Tree040941@AOL.com) or by phone 1-605-342-3234. If I am not home, leave a message and I will get back to you.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Jerry
