Highway from Buffalo to New Jersey in 1948

Since I have not lived in either state, I would like to know if anyone out there could tell me with the route someone would have taken going from Brooklyn, New York to New Jersey. I don't know the destination in New Jersey but it would have been close enough to go for an overnight visit and return in the morning -- So I don't think it would have been too far into the state. There was an accident where two of my family members were killed by a drunk driver in a head on crash. Can anybody help me in my search?
