Help. 1949 Hoboken ferry drowing of family member

My father's uncle Edward E. Ford died in 1949. The family was told that Eddie was on the Hoboken ferry, fell overboard and drowned. My father has a hard time believing the story since Eddie was a Merchant Marine during the war and survived 3 ship sinkings in the Atlantic.

Open to any suggestions as to where to begin to look for ANYTHING, news stories, obit., police reports, what districts I should focus my efforts on, etc.
