Hope you're still out there... I'm guessing the GH Nixon you are looking for is the same... sounds like it. He was a very distinguished CWV. If so, I have pics of his headstone if you'd like.

His Monument reads...
Nixon, George H.d. 4 July 188764 yrs., 8 mos., 25 days"I am ready to live or to die".(On the side of his monument was: "His monument is rather in his public life distinguished by honest sobriety faithfulness undaunted courage and a will and energy which nothing baffled.Geo. H. Nixon left the world better by having lifed in it.He heared none of the responsibilities of an intensely active life.")
"Col. George H. Nixon distinguished in the War of theConfederacy, had his early military experience as 1st Lt. of Co. B, 1st TN Inf. in the war with Mexico.At thebeginning of the War in 1861, he was holding a Federal office in the Territory of Nebraska by Appt. of President
Buchanan.resigning his position, he returned to Tennessee, and enlisted for duty, was elected Major, then Col. of the 48th Reg.Col. Nixon was, also, one of the leaders in establishing the railroad through Law. Co."
