My theory:As per the Haywood Co, Tenn. history site on the internet: Richard Nixon was the first settler, assuming a land grant given to his father, a Col. in the Rev. War.Wouldn't this indicate that his father was dead?At the time, the area was considered part of Madison Co, N.C. Early census records were destroyed but1827records indicate the a Francis Nixon transferred land in Wayne Co. Is it possible that the Col. named his son after Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, as many soldiers did?Or perhaps that Richard was Francis' father? There were also Elliotts in the area at the time.Let me know what you thinkValerie
