Dunnotar Castle, Stonehaven, Scotland
On a recent visit to Dunnotar Castle I noticed a mention of a Niven dated 1685 who was held in the Whigs' Vault. This was a small dungeon used to hold the 122 men and 45 women who refused to denounce their Covenanter status and accept Charles II's Episcopy.
The whole band were indiscriminately herded into the gloomy cellar since known as the 'Whigs' Vault' and they remained there from the 24th of May until the end of July with little food and no sanitation.
Although 37 of their number relented and swore allegiance, 25 escaped 15 of which were recaptured two of whom fell to their deaths from the battlements.
There is no record of the eventual fate of the Niven or the remainder of the inmates.
