Franz Hubert Nyssen was the son of Michael Nyssen and Maria Sybilla Schoehmakers. He was born in 1843 in de boyen, Grevenbicht, Limbutg, Netherlands. He immigrated to America in 1869. When he first arrived he worked on a farm in Chaska, MN, finally ending up in Shakopee, Scott, MN. Here he worked for Andrew Winker, owner of the Shakopee Brewery. In 1871, Andrew Winker died of typhoid fever after receiving a chill in his icehouse. Hubert Nyssen was later married to his widow Maria (Mary) Christina Jansen (Johnson) Winker in 1875 and bought the brewery. The Brewery is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as the Strunk-Nyssen House-(the first owner of the brewery was Herman H. Strunk). Hubert and Mary Nyssen had 3 children together: Henry Hubert or “Harry,” Mathilda Catherine, and Anna. Hubert became stepfather to Joseph, Andrew Lawrence, Mary Anna, and Ellen Winker. St Mark’s Catholic Church: This parish was established in 1856 in the community of Shakopee, which developed as the last river town on the south side of the Minnesota River, before the shallows and rapids by Carver. It is located 40 miles southwest of the center of the Twin Cities -- with easy four lane access. The beautiful German Gothic Church was built in 1865. It has wonderfully carved altars of butternut. The stained glass windows are literally from a family chapel of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria. Our organ was built in Germany. From "History of North Washington" Published 1904 JOSEPH WINKER Joesph Winker is a well know business man of Republic, where he is engaged in the brewery business. The plant is located two and one half miles east from the town. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January21, 1864, the son of Andrew and Mary (Johnson) Winker, natives of Germany and Sweden, respectively. The parents came to the United States in 1855, settling in St. Paul, where the father died in 1871. His widow is still living in that state. They were the parents of four children, Joseph, Mary, Lawrence and Ellen. Our subject was favored with a good education in St. Paul, studying in both the English and the German languages. At the age of twenty-two he began business for himself and at once learned brewing and followed it for years. He was not priveleged, however, to learn it from his father as he had died before Joseph was old enough to begin as an apprentice. In 1888, Mr. Winker left Minnesota and came to Montana, where he followed his trade until 1889. Owing to adverse circumstances, he was obliged to close out his business and in 1893, went to Butte, where he remained five years. In 1898, together with George Falligan, he came to Republic, and soon thereafter built the brewery which he is now operating. It is a very good large establishment and turns out twenty-five barrels a day. It is so located that he has abundance of spring water and a fine power to run the machinery. Mr. Winker has a partner, Arnold Maschke, and he gives his attention to operating a saloon in Republic while Mr. Winker supervises the brewery. In April, 1898, Mr. Winker married Miss Louise Collins, whose parents were born in Kentucky, and was one of a family of three children. In political matter Mr. Winker is liberal and bound by no party affiliations. Fraternally, he is a member of the Elks and Eagles, while his wife belongs to the Rebekahs.
