Help with Ira6 & Carolines Children or anything on Lotus6
All,
First I would like to say thank you to all the folks who have worked so hard and dug up so much.It makes me glad to know we all share a love for the interesting, and sometimes tangled web our shared history.
I am having a little bit of a struggle. My grandfather was Raymond Niles (b1903 d1976), Raymond had a brother named Lotus Robert Niles (b1901 d1962).
I know very little about Lotus Robert Niles other than he was an electrician by trade.Raised by his mother and step father after a divorce in 1911 and that he was a ww2 vet who is buried in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Raymond stays with his father, until his father becomes ill (and eventually dies) Raymond is sent to live with his aunt Mary until adulthood.
Their Father was Lotus N Niles (b1866 d1916) He was a letter carrier in Springfield.Their mother was Bertha (Haynes) Niles. They divorce in 1911 Bertha remarries a widower Frank Oliger.
Lotus N has an older sister and a younger brother.Lotus older sister is Mary Niles (b. Feb 1858 d1937)Mary is wed to Charles Alan Winship.
Lotus N Niles Younger brother is Ira Niles (b1869 d1936)
Mary, Lotus N and Iras Parents are Lotus Niles (b1819 d1895) and Adela Salisbury Niles (b1930 d1899).Lotus is a bank president for the Agricultural State bank of Ill, as well as being the attorney of the State Bank of Illinois.
Lotus comes to Ill at or around the same time as his brother Col Nathaniel Niles. Lotus Chooses to settle in Springfield Ill while Col Nathaniel Niles Settles 90 miles to the south in Belleville Ill, which is actually very close to St Louis.
Col Nathaniel Niles (b1817 d1900).Nathaniel was like his little brother was also a lawyer. He served in the Mexican war, and was a Col in the US Civil war commanding the 130 Ill Infantry. While not in my line Col Nathaniel Niles has a son named Lotus Niles(they do love that name) (b1853 d1925) who is a West Point graduate. I don't know if he is ever married or had any children.I do know that he was "in the 5's" every year he was at West Point. The Fives are the top 5 students of any given class.I know he goes on to be an artillery officer and is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery 25 Jamaica Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11208
I am stuck on who Col Nathaniel Niles (b1817 d1900)and Lotus Niles (b1819 d1895)father is.
Lotus's obit reads in part:
"Mr. Niles was a native of Plainfield, Otsego county, New York, born May 21, 1819. When he was eight years old his father's family removed to Albany, N. Y., and there he enjoyed what was then the luxury of an academic education. In the year 1847, when he was twenty-eight years old, he came out to this state and had resided in Illinois ever since"
Where I would like help from this body is additional confirmation that they are Ira Niles (b1794 d 1847) children which would make them(Nathl7 & Lotus7, Ira 6, Nathl 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1) and if Ira and Caroline had other children other than Nathaniel & Lotus.
I am basing my supposition that they are Ira's children on Ira being married to Caroline Katherine Martin.Caroline Katherine Martin dies and is buried 10 years after Ira in Belleville Ill, which is where Col Nathaniel Niles is residing.Out living her husband by 10 years she goes to live with her oldest Nathaniel.Ironically Col Nathaniel Niles brother Lotus has his mother in law (Deborah Wilder Randall)living with him till her passing in 1895. Its further evidenced to me anyway based in Allen D Niles research that Ira's father Nathaniel & his wife Martha "Nathl & Martha had other children (besides Ira) Deborah, Lotus, Sands, and perhaps another son. Martha was alive 3 May 1828 at Richfield when she recorded a deed made earlier on 12 Nov 1810 witnessed by Ira." It also helps understand the naming convention followed. Ira has a brother Lotus who he names a Son after, who names his son Lotus who names his son lotus. As well as Ira's other son Nathanial naming his son Lotus.
Sort of begs the question what did Lotus6(Nathl 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1) Niles do?what ever it was it seems to have inspired a lot of name sakes.
Assuming my supposition is correct, that Ira IS Lotus and Col Nathaniel Niles father that would make me 11th generationMichael(Ramona10, Raymond9, Lotus8 Lotus7, ira6 Nathl 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1)
Any information about Ira & Caroline Katherine Martin's children (if there are any besides Lotus and Col Nathaniel Niles or any data on Lotus6 and what he did to inspire several generations of name sakes would be appreciated.
Anyone who needs data on Lotus7 & Adela, or their children Mary8, Lotus N.8, or Ira 8.or on the children of Lotus8 Lotus R9 or Raymond9 let feel free to email me.I also have some reference articlesfrom the Springfield newspaper where in Lotus8 (Nathl7,Ira6 Nathl 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1) comes to Springfield visit his cousin Lotus8(Lotus7,Ira6 Nathl 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1)from WestPoint. As well as other clippings where Lotus and Nathaniel are mentioned.
Its been identified here previously but Lotus7 and Adela are neighbors (one house down) and friends of President Lincoln. Its also been identified that Lincolns property was indeed smaller, but in fairness Lincolns property was corner lot :) A fun excerpt from Adela's moving obit (1899)is: "Through her husband,Mrs. Niles became personally acquainted with many distinguished men of Illinois. Had she committed her reminiscences to paper and preserved them, they would doubtless have found many interested readers in these days when the importance of gathering together the threads of the state's history, as written in the lives of its great men, is being emphasized.
The Niles home was for many years within a stone's throw of that of the immortal Lincoln on Eighth street. Mr. Lincoln was an intimate friend of the family. Many a day and evening he spent with Mr. and Mrs. Niles in their home. Mrs. Niles was one of the very few close friends of Lincoln who gathered in a store room on the south side of the square in 1860 to hear the returns which showed that Mr. Lincoln had been called by his countrymen to fill the highest office in the government. She was among the first to offer personal congratulations when it was known that he was elected."
Thanks
Michael
