Some sources indicate that Nathl Niles (b 1835 RI), who later in 1872, was Speaker of the House of NJ, to be the son of Wm & Relief (Barron) Niles. Nathl's parents were actually Hon. Nathl 5 (Samuel 4-3, Nathl 2, John 1) by his second wife Elizabeth (Watson)Niles. Nathl & Eliz's son Wm Watson Niles, was born 29 Dec 1796 VT. Wm. Watson Niles married Mary W. [ ? ], b c1799ME. Wm. W. was a clergyman, either Baptist or Episcopal according to the 1850 US census. He died after 1850.
Wm. W. Niles (b 1796), and wife Mary, are counted twice in the 1850 USC. In Sep 1850 they are at NYC Ward 13, wife Mary, sons Wm. Niles Jr.,(age 25), Nathaniel (age 15), dau Mary E., age 12, and son Roderick M. Niles (age 8). In Oct of the same year they are at Stamford CT, wife Mary (b ME) Nathl (age 15, b RI) and Martin age 8, b NJ. By 1860 Wm. W. Niles is deceased and his widow Mary W., dau Mary E., age 22, & son Roderic (age 18) are at Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ. Not to be confused with this Wm Watson Niles is Wm. Watson Niles (b 1822VT)a well known attorney in NYC and the son of Wm. & Relief Niles of Vermont.
Nathl Niles (b1835 RI), son of Wm W., and grandson of Hon. Nathl Niles, was an attorney and prominent in NJ politics and was later president of a bank in NYC. He was accused of purloining funds in his trust belonging to a former French madam. I'm not sure of the outcome of the case.
Nathl's brother Wm (b1825; d1897Trumansburg NY) was a minister, as was his son, Wm. Henry Niles (Jefferson Co., NY).
