While looking for Bibles with family trees included, I came across a 1786 Bible that at one time belonged to Jeremiah JOHNSON, who married Abigail Remson, Nov. 10, 1787. On another page it had, Jeremiah Johnson, his book. Grandfather of Cornelia and Doris. Gr-grandfather of Grandma JONES. On another page was written, Property of CORNELIA NILES. Dutch Immigrant's family BIBLE 1778 - with clasps Dutch Immigrant's family BIBLE 1778 - with clasp A really nice 1778 leather-bound bible in Dutch language with pages edged in gold. Front pages have beautifully hand written inscriptions in English: "Jerimiah Johnson. His Book May 12th 1786" and over the page "Jerimiah Johnson Weded to Miss Abigail Remsen Nov 10th 1787". There is also in inscription in the back page from 1787 written in Dutch. This was also added by the owner of the Bible. Jeremiah Johnson, and the Gen. Nathaniel Woodhull mentioned in the newspaper clipping at the back of the bible. It turns out Johnson grew up on Long Island NY during the Revolutionary War, and saw first hand the prison ships moored in Wallabout Bay near his home. He later wrote about what he saw. He may have even known Revolutionary War Hero Gen. Woodhull, who's bravery in the face of death is legendary. Johnson became a very successful man, at one point becoming Mayor of Brooklyn. At the time of his death he was the president of a Society to raise a memorial to Woodhull - hence the linkage. I hope this may help someone. Notify Administrator about this message?
