Greenwich. Tradition is he settled next at Shaftsbury Vt, with his father John. Though no record of him found there he is probably the Samuel in 1790 at Little Hoosick NY across the NY/VT border from Shaftsbury. In 1795 Samuel Niles, of Richfield, NY, who with Nathaniel Niles, of W. Greenwich, bought land in Otsego Co., NY. In 1796 Samuel & Susannah of Richfield sold the westerly half of Lot 52 of Schuyler Patent to Nathaniel Niles of Richfield. In the 1800 US census Samuel & Nathaniel are residing next to one another. In 1810 "S' & "G" Niles are residing next to one another, probably Samuel & son Gardner. The "Widow Niles" near them is most likely the wife of Samuel's brother Nathaniel Niles deceased. Sam & Susannah (both signed) sold their land at Richfield in 1815 and purchased land in 1816 at Attica, Genesse Co.( now Wyo.), NY. He sold this land in 1818 to Anthony Niles, a son. In 1830 Samuel & Anthony are at Wethersfield (est. 1823 from Orangeville). Samuel went in 1835 to Troy MI to live with his son Johnson Niles (founder of Troy). Samuel & Johnson are interred in the same plot at Crook's Road Cem., Troy. His birth year "1748" on the marker is incorrect. The DAR Patriot Index lists his wife as "Smellage Sisson" also incorrect or else confused with another Samuel, a first cousin of his. Info on Sam's father John 4 can be posted if needed.
