Hi Lois,

My mother's father's mother (my great grandma) was a NIEWOEHNER. I have been researching that line and have a little bit of information on Reba and her descendants. I don't know how much information you have, but I hope some of this will help you.

Reba Grace Kohlstedt: (Before reading this, please note that I have found 2 different dates for her birth). The book "Tombstone Inscriptions in Wayne County, Indiana Vol. II" compiled by Beverly Yount, c1968 shows her buried in Lutherania Cemetery in Richmond IN. Her name is listed as "Reba (Kolhstodt) Niewoehner, (b.6-19)1894-19”. Later I found out she died at age 97, so the headstone must have been purchased and carved before her death, with the last 2 digits after "19" to be filled in after death. I don't live in IN so I haven't had a chance to actually see the headstone for myself but I am assuming that she was to be buried with her husband (again...assuming) because the book has her name listed directly under Carl's with a marriage date of 22Aug1915 (Note: she died in IL so don't know if she is actually buried at Lutherania). Also, information provided by the author may be from the actual inscription & part may have been taken from the cemetery files. I got this information when I first started doing my genealogy and didn't think to read the beginning of the book. I am sure it would have explained that. I know better now :o)

The 2nd date I have for her birth is 12Jun1893 which I found in 2 different places: Ancestry.com SSDI & the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

1900 Census:
Reba, age 7, only child living with divorced mom Flora (age 23). They are all living with Flora's mother Ida M. & step dad Theodore BENHAM @ 229 N 18th St, Richmond IN. This is Ida’s 2nd marriage & Theodore’s 1st. Married to Theodore for 21 years.

1910 Census:
Reba, age 16, only child living with mom Flora and step dad Wm WISSINGER (step dad is cabinet maker at a piano factory). This is Flora’s 2nd marriage, Wm’s 1st. Married to Wm for 6 years.

22Aug1915: Married Carl B. NIEWOEHNER (2nd child of John “Henry” NIEWOEHNER & Catherine AIRING. Born in Richmond IN, “b:2Nov1894 & d:25Mar1966” as per Tombstone Inscription book OR “b:23Nov 1893 & d:Mar1966” as per SSDI & WPA).

1920 Census:
NIEWOEHNER Carl, age 26, living with wife Reba, age 26, at 820 S. 8th, Richmond IN. Carl is a clerk at a grocery (probably his dad and mom’s grocery).

1921-2: Gave birth to a son, Carl NIEWOEHNER Jr.

1925-6 Polk City Directory:
NIEWOEHNER Carl (Reba) residing at 820 S. 8th, Richmond IN.

1930 Census:
NIEWOEHNER Carl, age 36, living with wife Reba, age 36, and son Carl Jr, age 8, at 820 S. 8th, Richmond IN.

1941: Carl Jr graduates from Richmond High School, as per Richmond High Alumni Book c1996.

1941-1945: Carl NIEWOEHNER Jr marries Beatrice P. (haven’t discovered her last name yet.)

1945 Polk City Directory:
No Carl or Reba listed in Richmond IN directory.
NIEWOEHNER Carl Jr (Beatrice) factory worker @ Perfect Circle. Resides at 411 N 21st, Richmond IN.

Carl is listed as being one of Richmond Indiana’s World War II veterans. Not sure if this was Sr or Jr.

1960 Polk City Directory:
NIEWOEHNER Carl (Reba G.) clerk at Sudhoff Cigar Store, resides at 1010 SW “A”, Richmond IN.

25Mar1966, Richmond’s newspaper, Palladium Item, pg 7, column 7:
Obituary appears for Carl NIEWOEHNER. Dead at age 71.

1970 Polk City Directory:
NIEWOEHNER Reba G. (widow Carl B.), retired, home 1010 SW 'A' St in Richmond IN.
NIEWOEHNER Carl Jr (Beatrice) repr Tel Co, home 100 Elmhurst Dr in Richmond IN.

16Oct1990 Palladium Item, pg 4:
Obituary appears for Reba NIEWOEHNER. 'Reba Grace Niewoehner (Mrs Carl) former resident dies in Illinois at age 97’. (Note: This would lead you to believe her birthdate was 1893 vs 1894, but who knows for sure. You can send for a copy of that article for very little money and I am sure it would give more info, including the actual death date and possibly surviving family members).

FYI: Morrison Reeves Library has an awesome website for searching newspaper articles (wonderful for locating obituaries) for Wayne County residents at http://www.mrl.lib.in.us/webpacj/webclient.html (click on "Newspaper Index", type in Niewoehner Reba). When you search, you need to think about married names instead of maiden ones.

I have several Richmond IN city directories, Richmond High yearbooks, their Alumni Directory as well as Earlham College’s Alumni Directory and a few yearbooks. I would be happy to look up some names if that would help. I am in the process of getting my house ready to sell, so if I don't get back to you immediately, don't panic. :o)
