I recently purchased the subject undated studio portrait of an infant taken by Gillette, San Mateo, CA. It is identified on the back of the mount in period handwriting:
"Elmer Jeus Nielsen
age 5 mo. weight 22 lbs.
A mighty good
baby I'll say."
I believe this is the same person as the Elmer J. Nielsen listed in the 1910 Census data for Pajaro, Monterey Co., CA; and the 1920 and 1930 Census data for Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., CA. He is also listed in the California Death Index and the Social Security Death Index.
Elmer was born 29 Jun 1901 in CA, and died 26 Feb 1979 in Santa Cruz Co., CA (last residence was Watsonville). He was born to German/Danish parents: Jes/Jess P. Nielsen, born about 1876 (immigrated 1883), and Helene (maiden name unknown), born about 1879 (immigrated 1884, 1890, or 1895). Elmer had a sister, Viola/Violet, born about 1905 in CA. Elmer's father was variously employed as a dairy farmer, grass farmer, and fruit buyer/commissioner. Elmer worked as a bank clerk.
