It's been quite a number of years since I did anything in researching this. However, as I recall from that early research, one of the early listings of the name (not spelled as currently -- Nidiffer) was associated with an immigrant --"a poor immigrant from the Palatinate." The Palatinate was described as a region in Germany --I've forgotten precisely where, now. I think it's fairly safe to assume it's German.
