Unfortunately, Michele, none of the John's you listed seem to connect with mine.
I do know Lewis/Louis, Philamina/Eliz, and John Nicola (etc) were NOT born in the U.S.John Nicola was born in 1844 and according to the U.S. census', Louis was born around 1817 and Eliz. born around 1825.Unfortunately, their home land was listed differently on different census' so that does NOT help to pin it down any better.Since none of the "original 3" were born in the U.S., I can only "assume" (ahem) John was born in Alsace-Lorraine.Also, since John was born in 1844 and they show up on the first U.S. census in 1852 (in Iowa) it leads me to believe the 3 of them immigrated to the U.S. between 1844 and 1852.Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a ship record indicating when they did immigrate and don't find a naturalization request either. Then, the other 2 sons (Henry and Anthony) were born.I descend from the Anthony line.
Okay, reasonable theories and speculation but I haven't been able to prove ANY of that. What compounds the problem are the major changes in power during that period for Germany, France, and Prussia during - which probably explains why they kept changing their home country on the census'.
I did find a Civil War record for a "John Nicola" and it shows Iowa as his home and place of enlistment but ..... it contains no other information.I have not sent off for the military records yet so don't know if that is MY John or not.Have you found any Civil War records for any of YOUR John Nicola's?If so, it might eliminate (or confirm) whether that is my John or not.
Thanks so much for replying and good luck with your search!
