Nicola,Nicolai-Ticino Switzerland,1700

My branch of the Nicola family has been
in Gordervio, Ticino Switzerland since
1700 (with Emigration to Austrailia,1855 and
California,1888) when a Bernardo Nicolai
arrived as "luogo tenente"= local sheriff for
the German Swiss overlords. He had previously
been a "cavaliere pontifico"= Papal cavalry
officer. He may have come from France. THe
name changed to Nicola shortly afterwards.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
