Hi, Jean...this is an old post but I may have a connection. My 3x great-grandmother was Helen/Ellen Nichol Dawson, born in Aberdeenshire around 1844. On her death certificate it lists her parents as Margaret Crookshank and James Nichol. I located her in the Scotland Census Records for 1851 as "Ellen Dempster Nichol." Her sister Margaret Longmuir Nichol is there as well. Helen married David Dawson and emigrated to Vermont. She died here of consumption in 1890. Her daughter Maggie Dawson Mackie was my 2x great grandmother. Here is a link to my ancestry page
