After 12 years of research, just pushed my line one step further up the family tree.
Turns out Coles Nickerson of Orange Co. NY ca 1795-1861 was my gggg grandfather. He had several children.
His last name Nickerson was spelled incorrectly in historical records more often than not. Cole Nicholson, Coles Nixon etc. There was nothing to tie my ggg grandfather John to this man - until I found a new variation mispelling the last name that led me to think he actually thought it was correct. That led to a family tree where John was brother to one of Coles sons.
Cole Nickerson originally married Maria Sensibaugh
In 1818 the birth of a girl Elizabeth was announced at the old dutch reformed church of Montgomery, Orange County NY.
John's name is given as John N. Nickerson
I think the N might stand for Coles likely father - Nathaniel.
Children of Coles and Maria include:
Elizabeth Nickerson born 1818
John N. Nickerson born by 1820
George W. Nickerson born about 1825 give or take 2 years. He died in 1896.
Governier Nickerson born about 1830.
There was one more son, and possibly more daughters, not yet identified.
Coles lived in Montgomery, Orange Co. from 1818 until about 1832. He then moved to Walkill, Orange Co. in 1833. In 1834 he married Julia Williams. They had one daughter Adele?.
After 1855 he moved to Ellensville, Ulster Co. where some of his sons had a business. He was censused in the household of George W. Nickerson there in 1860.
John Nickerson born between 1814 and 1820 was married to Mahala Williams. They had the following family:
all born in Orange county except the last, who was probably born in Susquehanna County, Pennslyvania.
William H. Nickerson 1839-1883 or 1887.
Sarah E. Nickerson b. 1842
Marilda or Martha M. 1845
Frances 1854 married a Van Barger, or Van Targer near Windsor, Broome County, NY
When you include the children of Foster Nickerson who was probably Coles brother, and the children of Jabez Nickerson in Ellenville, who was probably Coles uncle, then almost all of the Nickerson's in Orange County, and Ellenville, Ulster County during the 1800's. were from the same line.
